Eliminate gasket compression set, extrusion, and breakage

Over time, conventional cut or molded gaskets lose their elastic properties and become less resilient.  Continual pounding of the gasket by the flanges causes a general decrease in the thickness of the gasket, cause the gasket to squeeze out from between the flanges or even break.  Eventually, leaks will follow.

Loctite® gasketing products are the BETTER WAY!  Better because the cured thermoset plastic can withstand the pounding and vibrations and will not change over time like cut or molded gaskets.  Additionally, the elimination of conventional gaskets also eliminates the need to continually re-tension the flange bolts.

Loctite® Retaining Compounds: The better way to improve or eliminate shrink, press, and slip fit assemblies.

• Improving the strength of the assembly
• Allowing looser tolerances – lowering costs, producing less distortion, and easing assembly
• Eliminating fretting corrosion by completely sealing the joint
• Unitizing keyed assemblies to make them stronger and prevent key wallow

Improving the strength of the assembly

With press- and slip- fits, Loctite® Retaining Compounds can either provide the same strength assembly with less interference or greater strength with the same interference. 

For example, with the proper use of Loctite Retaining Compounds:

• Press-fit strengths can be doubled (steel:steel)
• Slip fits can exceed heavy press/shrink strength (steel:steel)
• Slip fits (steel:aluminum:bronze) can equal press-fit strength

Allowing looser tolerances – lowering costs, producing less distortion, and easing assembly

• Looser tolerances:  With the use of Loctite Retaining Compounds, slip fits can often replace press fits, thus close control of interference between pins and collars is unnecessary.  Concern about concentricity, parallelism, and roundness is reduced or eliminated.
• Easier assembly:  If bonding slip-fits is used, press fitting is not needed.  If press-fits are used, less interference is required, thus lower assembly forces can be used.  The result is fewer bent pins and lower hub stresses.
• Fewer rejects from distortion:  Since slip-fits go together easily, rejects due to distortion and galling are eliminated with bonding slip-fits with Loctite Retaining Compounds.
• Fewer field failures:  Assembly induced stresses, inherent in press-fits, are absent from slip-fit designs.  Thus, bonding slip-fits with Loctite Retaining Compounds improves fatigue life of the assembly and reduces field failures.

Eliminating fretting corrosion by completely sealing the joint

Fretting corrosion results from shocks and vibration of the assembly.  The onset and severity of fretting corrosion is difficult to predict but it represents a serious problem for fatigued assemblies as they can eventually result in fatigue cracking. 

Filling the inner space with the machinery adhesive eliminates this problem.  The hardened compound provides a 100% seal preventing any corrosion.

Unitizing keyed or splined assemblies to make them stronger and prevent key wallow and backlash

Where keys and splines are used for torsional driving without longitudinal sliding, backlash is often common.  Shock and vibration of the assembly often causes keyway wallowing and fatigue failure.
